According to a new technical market research report available at Electronics.ca Publications, Nanotechnology in Environmental Applications: The Global Market, the global market for nanotechnology in environmental applications was worth $1.1 billion in 2008 and an estimated $2.0 billion in 2009. This will increase to $21.8 million in 2014, for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 61.8%.
The market is broken down into the environmental segments of remediation, protection, maintenance and enhancement. Nanotechnology for environmental protection is the largest market segment, generating $661.4 million in 2008 and an estimated $1.0 billion in 2009. This should reach $10.3 billion in 2014, for a CAGR of 58.1%.
Environmental enhancement currently has the second-largest share of the market, generating $189.4 million in 2008. This segment is expected to increase to $463.5 million in 2009 and $2.8 billion in 2014, for a CAGR of 43.6%.
Environmental maintenance is the third-largest market segment, with revenues of $204.0 million in 2008 and an estimated $385.4 million in 2009. This segment is expected to increase at a CAGR of 35.0% to reach $1.7 billion in 2014.
Expansive potential markets for environmental nanotechnology products already exist for an array of urgently needed environmental remedial applications, some of which appear to have requirements that are approaching critical levels.
Nanotechnologies applied to environmental maintenance would test, monitor, track, and degrade the vast number of biological and chemical, as well as radiological, agents and elements that are shown to have both immediate and cumulatively damaging effects on the environment and human health. This challenge might be met by the design, construction, and implementation of extremely responsive and interactive nanosensors and nanosensor networks.
