Taiwan’s electronics industry is today dominated by a relatively small number of large groups. In addition to the capital intensive semiconductor and display companies the country also has a significant number of ODMs which hold a major share in the global production of computer and communications products. Taiwanese companies are also important in the production of electronic components. In 2015 electronics output declined by 1.1%, but on the back of the upturn in the global semiconductor market in the second half of the year increased by 3.8% in 2016. A further acceleration in the global semiconductor market in 2017 should result in the IC segment driving output up by a further 9.4% for the year as a whole. Growth in the semiconductor segment will offset the on-going decline in electronics equipment output.
