The thin films market has thus evolved over the past few years alongside developments in the electronics and semiconductor industries. Photovoltaics (PV) is the major technology that has historically made the most use of thin films, and today dominates the market, accounting for more than 85% of the market share. The thin film batteries market, though smaller in size, is expected to witness robust growth during the forecast period. Our goal is to examine traditional and alternative energy technologies to determine the use, if any, of thin films in their fabrication and operation.

Global PV inverter shipments grew 42% in 2015 to 59.7 GW, up from 42.1 GW in 2014. Shipment growth will be flat in 2016, as the Chinese and Japanese markets level off and the U.S. market works through a build-up of shipments from 2015, but the market will regain steam and grow 11% per year from 2016 to 2020. Overall, shifting global demand, rapidly evolving product preferences and competitive pricing will be key themes moving forward for the dynamic PV inverter industry.

The scope of this report is intentionally wide. We cover the major sources of renewable energy as primary fuels—hydroelectric, wind, solar, geothermal and oceanic sources (wave, tidal and thermal) and liquid biofuels for transportation. There is no shortage in the marketplace of reports on each of these sources. However, what existing reports lack and what this report is intended to provide is a global perspective that places each source in a relevant context for decision makers in both the public and private sectors.

Polysilicon is the primary feedstock used for the production of crystalline silicon PV, which constituted 90 percent of global PV module production in 2013. In recent years, rapid growth of the PV market has led to the emergence of a dedicated solar polysilicon supply chain, and the solar industry now dominates global polysilicon consumption (estimated 90% in 2014). After enduring a sustained period of severe overcapacity in 2011-2013, pricing rebounded strongly in 2014, and renewed confidence in strong end-market growth in 2014-2016 has prompted the re-start of many previously shuttered plants and the resumption of capacity addition plans in 2015.

Microinverters and DC optimizers (collectively known as module-level power electronics, or MLPE) comprise one of the newest and fastest-growing sectors in the solar industry. The product segment surpassed 1 GW of annual volume and over 2 GW of cumulative installed capacity in 2013, just four years after the first contemporary products entered the market. While initially considered a niche solution for residential or shaded rooftops, the category has consistently expanded its appeal, to the point where nearly half of the MLPE category’s volume is in the commercial-scale market, particularly for DC optimizers. The module-level electronics providers have done this by evolving their value proposition while simultaneously reducing product costs.

The global PV industry's recent past has seen wafer, cell, and module suppliers at the mercy of an inhospitable supply-demand imbalance throughout the global market. With supply consistently 200% of demand annually, c-Si module prices have fallen approximately 70% in two years. One positive externality of this cutthroat pricing is that manufacturing costs have fallen in line with pricing declines. This is mostly because pricing for key inputs further up the value chain has also fallen as a result of overcapacity and consequent margin evaporation.
